Our Mission: Embracing Christ, Engaging the World 

The Diocese of Kentucky is called to engage the world as a witness to Christ through worship, study, fellowship, evangelism, social justice and service.

The Diocese of Kentucky comprises 36 congregations with some 10,500 members.

  • The diocese covered the entire state of Kentucky until 1895, when it was divided in half with the Diocese of Kentucky covering the western half of the state and the Diocese of Lexington covering the eastern half.
  • The first bishop of Kentucky, the Rt. Rev. Benjamin B. Smith, served from 1832-1884. The Rt. Rev. Edwin F. Gulick Jr. is the seventh bishop of Kentucky. He became Diocesan Bishop on April 17, 1994.
  • The seat of the bishop of the Diocese of Kentucky is Christ Church Cathedral in Louisville.
  • The diocese is part of the Episcopal Church, a nationwide community of 2.3 million members established in the United States in 1789.
  • The presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church is the Most. Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori.
  • The Episcopal Church is part of the worldwide Anglican Communion of 70 million people in 38 provinces.
